It is a melee weapon, which means it is used for close fighting. The tool has a long stick with a small handle attached to the side. This handle sits about one third of the way down the stick. Most tonfas are between 15 and 20 inches long. They are often made from red or white oak wood.

People usually use them in pairs to fight.

There are many ways to use a tonfa to move and strike. A person can use a natural grip called honte-mochi. In this grip, the handle is in the hand. The long part of the stick rests along the forearm. This helps protect the arm like a shield.

A person can also use a reverse grip called gyakute-mochi. This grip is good for hitting or thrusting. There is even a special grip called tokushu-mochi. This lets a person grab the shaft to use the handle like a hook.

No one is sure exactly where the tonfa began.

Some people believe it came from China. Others think it started in Okinawa or Southeast Asia. In China and Malaysia, the names for it mean "crutch." This might mean it started as a tool for walking. In Thailand and Cambodia, people use similar tools. In Cambodia, they are called staupe. In Thailand, they are called mai sok. These versions are often short clubs tied to the arms.

Different types of tonfa have many different shapes. Some have rounded sides and a rounded bottom. These look like a semicircle. Other tonfas are square with flat faces.

Some are shaped like a paddle, where the bottom is wider. There are even crude pointed tonfas. These have points at the ends for stabbing defense. In Vietnam, a similar tool is called a song xỉ. These are made of steel or aluminum bars. They have sharp tips for attacking.

Modern history shows how the tonfa changed over time. In 1972, law enforcement agencies began using a version called a side handled baton. The most popular model was named the PR-24.

These were used by many officers for patrols. However, many agencies started to stop using them. This happened after the Rodney King beating. During that event, several officers used batons like the PR-24. Today, the tonfa remains a famous part of Okinawan martial arts.
