They are recognized as one of the five best-selling American girl groups in history. The group sold more than 60 million records to fans across the globe. Their music was defined by a unique blend of rhythm and blues (R&B), hip-hop, and funk. This specific sound helped them achieve massive commercial success throughout the 1990s. They became a defining act of the decade, earning high rankings from major music publications.

The group's most famous lineup consisted of three distinct performers. Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins provided deep contralto vocals. Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas contributed middle-range mezzo-soprano vocals. Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes provided soprano raps that added a hip-hop edge to their songs.

Their name, TLC, was an initialism representing the first letters of their names. They were also known for their bold visual style. This included brightly colored clothing and unusual costumes in their music videos.

The formation of the group involved several different people and changes. It began with a concept by producer Ian Burke and a teenager named Crystal Jones. Watkins and Lopes joined Jones to form a group originally called "2nd Nature." After a management change, Perri "Pebbles" Reid renamed the group TLC. Jones eventually left the group, and Rozonda Thomas joined as the third member. Thomas had previously worked as a part-time backup dancer for the act Damian Dame. By May 1991, the trio was signed to LaFace Records.

TLC's musical career reached new heights with their early albums. Their debut, *Ooooooohhh... On the TLC Tip*, was released in February 1992. The album was a major success, selling four million copies in the United States. It featured three top-ten hits on the Billboard Hot 100. Later, their second album, *CrazySexyCool*, was released in November 1994. This album achieved diamond certification from the RIAA. It sold over 7.7 million copies in the U.S. and over 14 million copies worldwide.

The group achieved many historic milestones through their music. Their song "Waterfalls" became the biggest hit of their career. This track featured socially conscious lyrics regarding drug dealing and unsafe sex. TLC also became the first black act to win the MTV Video Music Award for Video of the Year. They earned five Grammy Awards and five MTV Video Music Awards over their career. Billboard magazine ranked them as the seventh-most-successful act of the 1990s.

Despite their fame, the members faced significant personal and financial challenges. Tionne Watkins managed a blood disorder known as sickle-cell anemia. The group also dealt with legal and financial struggles related to their management contracts. In 1995, the members filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. They reported debts totaling $3.5 million due to various expenses and contract terms. This included medical bills for Watkins and costs related to a legal incident involving Lopes. These difficulties were a complex part of their journey toward success.

The group's legacy continued even after the loss of a member. Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes passed away in 2002. Rather than finding a replacement, Watkins and Thomas chose to continue as a duo. They released a fifth album, titled *TLC*, in 2017.

TLC's influence can be seen in how they helped shape modern music genres. Their "new jill swing" sound opened doors for many other female groups. This includes acts such as SWV, Destiny's Child, and 702. By blending different musical styles, they helped evolve the landscape of R&B and hip-hop. Their ability to combine catchy melodies with meaningful social messages set a standard for future artists.
