Boyz II Men is a famous American vocal harmony group from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

They are celebrated for their smooth R&B style and complex vocal arrangements. The group is widely recognized for its contribution to the "hip hop doo-wop" genre. This style combines classic soul singing with modern, drum-heavy beats. Unlike many R&B groups that feature one lead singer, Boyz II Men uses a multi-lead arrangement. This means every member takes turns leading different parts of a song. This unique structure allows the group to showcase a wide range of vocal textures.

The group's sound relies on the distinct vocal ranges of its members. Wanyá Morris provides a melismatic tenor, which involves singing many notes on one syllable. Shawn Stockman uses a crystal-clear falsetto, a very high vocal register. Nathan Morris contributes a husky baritone, a mid-range voice. Michael McCary, a former member, provided deep bass notes that often appeared in spoken-word sections.

Together, these voices create layered harmonies that define their musical identity. This technical skill helped the group win four Grammy Awards during the 1990s.

The group's history began in 1985 at the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts. Originally named "Unique Attraction," the founding members included Nathan Morris and Marc Nelson. They were later joined by Wanyá Morris, Shawn Stockman, and Michael McCary. The group was heavily inspired by the band New Edition. They even renamed themselves "Boyz II Men" after a New Edition hit song. To find success, the group famously snuck into a concert at the Philadelphia Civic Center in 1989. There, they performed an a cappella version of "Can You Stand the Rain" for Michael Bivins of New Edition. Bivins became their manager and helped them sign with Motown Records.

Boyz II Men achieved massive commercial success with their debut album, Cooleyhighharmony, in 1991.

The album sold over nine million copies and featured the hit "Motownphilly." Their 1992 single "End of the Road" became a massive success. It spent thirteen consecutive weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. This set a major record at the time. The group's momentum continued with their second album, II, released in 1994. This album became one of the best-selling R&B albums of all time.

The group also set several historic records on the music charts. Their 1994 single "I'll Make Love to You" spent fourteen weeks at number one. This broke the record previously held by "End of the Road." In 1995, their song "One Sweet Day," featuring Mariah Carey, also set new records for weeks at the top. Remarkably, Boyz II Men became only the second musical act to replace themselves at number one. They joined The Beatles, who achieved this feat in 1964. This happened when the song "On Bended Knee" took the top spot from "I'll Make Love to You."

Despite their success, the group faced various challenges and transitions. Founding member Marc Nelson left the group before their first album was recorded. During the late 1990s, the group dealt with label conflicts and health issues. Wanyá Morris suffered from a polyp on his vocal cords, which delayed a tour. Michael McCary dealt with multiple sclerosis, which affected his ability to perform dance routines. He eventually left the group in 2003 due to these health concerns. Today, the group continues as a trio consisting of Nathan Morris, Wanyá Morris, and Shawn Stockman.

The legacy of Boyz II Men is significant within the music industry. In a 2012 retrospective, Billboard named them the "biggest boy band." They are frequently cited as one of the greatest doo-wop vocal groups in history. Their influence can be seen in how modern R&B groups approach vocal harmonies.
