Menudo was a highly influential Puerto Rican boy band.

It is often called the most iconic Latino pop music band in history. Several major publications, including Billboard and Teen Vogue, have ranked them among the biggest boy bands of all time. They were the only Latin group to appear on these prestigious lists. The group achieved massive success through radio hits, television films, and several mini-series. Their impact reached far beyond music, as they became a global cultural phenomenon.

The band operated using a unique and distinctive structural system. Because the members were teenagers, they experienced puberty during their time in the group. This biological process caused permanent changes in their vocal range and timbre, which is the unique quality of a voice. To maintain their specific sound, members were required to leave the group when they reached approximately 17 years of age. Younger vocalists were then recruited to take their places. This cycle meant that more than fifty different members passed through the group during its history. While the lineup was always changing, the group usually consisted of five male teenagers at any given time.

The group's early years were defined by a specific set of members and rapid growth. Music producer Edgardo Díaz formed the group in 1977. The original lineup included the Sallaberry brothers, Fernando and Nefty, and the Meléndez brothers, Carlos, Óscar, and Ricky. These boys were signed to Padosa Records and released their debut album, Los Fantasmas, in 1977. As the members aged, the rotation began immediately. For example, Nefty Sallaberry was the first to leave in 1978 at age 15. He was replaced by 12-year-old René Farrait. This pattern of replacement became the defining mechanic of the Menudo brand.

During the early 1980s, Menudo entered a period of international stardom. The release of the album "I Want to Be" in 1981 served as a major launchpad for their global fame. The group's popularity was so intense that fans developed terms like "Menuditis" or "Menudomania" to describe their excitement. They expanded their reach into Latin America, including Mexico, Argentina, and Brazil, and eventually into Asia. Their success was supported by massive commercial ventures. They released merchandise such as Menudo dolls, Topps trading cards, and even a board game called "Menudo Karshow." They also became the first boy band to own a private jet.

This Lockheed JetStar had previously belonged to U.S. President Richard Nixon.

The financial and statistical scale of Menudo's success was enormous. It is estimated that the group sold 20 million albums worldwide. They also generated more than 300 million US dollars in revenue. Their popularity was reflected in their ability to sell out massive venues. In Brazil, they performed before hundreds of thousands of fans. In one instance in São Paulo, a stadium with a 100,000-person capacity was so popular that 200,000 people attempted to attend. These figures highlight the massive commercial engine the group became during its peak years.

Menudo also served as a significant training ground for future international superstars. Several members went on to achieve massive solo careers after their time in the group. Most notably, Ricky Martin was a member from 1984 to 1989. Another prominent artist, Draco Rosa, served in the band from 1984 to 1987. The group's evolution was not limited to personnel; their musical style also shifted. In the mid-1980s, the group moved away from "bubblegum-pop" toward a more rugged, rock-and-roll aesthetic. This specific era of the group was known as "Los Hijos Del Rock," or The Sons of Rock.

The legacy of Menudo is tied to the broader evolution of the music industry and pop culture. The group demonstrated how a musical brand could be maintained through a rotating cast of performers. This model allowed the group to stay young and relevant for many years. Even after the original group's popularity waned in the 1990s, the name continued to exist. The remaining members performed as MDO until 2002. Later, members of the "golden era" reunited for special tours, such as the "Súbete a Mi Moto" tour in 2019. This shows how the group's influence continues to connect different generations of fans.
