They are known as one of the most iconic Latino pop groups ever. Many big magazines have ranked them as one of the greatest boy bands in history. They were so popular that fans called their excitement "Menudomania." This was a feeling of huge popularity similar to other famous music crazes. The band was more than just singers; they were stars in movies and on television. They even had their own series like "I Want to Be" and "Forever Friends."

The band had a very special way of working. As the boys grew up, their voices changed because of puberty. When a member reached age 17, his voice became too deep for the group's style. At that point, the member would leave and a younger singer would take his place. Because of this rule, more than fifty different members joined the band over time. Most of the time, the group was made up of five teenage boys. This kept the band sounding fresh and young for many years.

Music producer Edgardo Díaz started the group in 1977. The very first lineup had five boys in it. It included the Sallaberry brothers, Fernando and Nefty. It also included the Meléndez brothers, Carlos, Óscar, and Ricky. Some of these boys were even cousins of the producer. They released their first album, called "Los Fantasmas," in that same year. By 1978, they were already releasing more music like the album "Laura."

Menudo became huge stars all over the world. They sold an estimated 20 million albums and made over 300 million US dollars. They were so successful that they became the first boy band to own a private jet.

This jet was a Lockheed JetStar that once belonged to a president. Their music reached fans in many places like Mexico, Brazil, and Japan. Fans could even buy many things like Menudo dolls and trading cards.

Many famous stars began their careers as members of Menudo. For example, the singer Ricky Martin was in the band from 1984 to 1989. Another star, Draco Rosa, was a member from 1984 to 1987. The band's music changed over time, too. In the mid-1980s, they even moved toward a rock-and-roll style. This new look was called "Los Hijos Del Rock." Even though the group changed many times, their impact on music stayed strong.
