The band features stepbrothers Residente and Visitante. They also work with their half-sister, iLe. The group is known for an eclectic musical style. This means they mix many different kinds of music together. They often use instruments that are not common in hip-hop. For example, they use a charango, which is a small string instrument. They also use a bombo legüero, which is a large drum.

Their music is different from reggaeton because of these unique sounds.

Making their music involves many different steps and ideas. Residente uses his background in design to write very visual lyrics. He says his songs are descriptive, like pieces of art. The group also uses lyrics to share social commentary. This means they write songs about important issues in Latin American culture. Sometimes their songs are satirical, which means they use humor to make a point. They have used their music to speak out about many things. For instance, they made a song called "Ley De Gravedad" to help stop people from firing bullets into the air on New Year's Eve.

The story of the band began with a family connection. Residente and Visitante met when they were only two years old. Their parents married, making them stepbrothers. They grew up in a community in Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico. They named their band after the street where they lived, Calle 13.

Before this, they lived on Calle 11. They started recording music together in 2004. At first, they even said they were doing it as a joke. They wanted to share their songs on a website.

Calle 13 has achieved great success since their debut. Their first album, titled Calle 13, came out in 2005. It included popular songs like "¡Atrévete-te-te!". In 2007, their second album, Residente o Visitante, reached number 1 on the Top Latin Albums chart. Their third album, Los de Atrás Vienen Conmigo, won Album of the Year in 2009.

Their music connects to many different parts of the world. They have worked with artists from Canada, Spain, and Mexico. While traveling in South America, they found new musical tools. This trip helped them learn about indigenous and African-descended cultures. They even performed with traditional dancers from Colombia.
