They are known for a style called desert blues. This music mixes traditional Tuareg sounds with Western rock music. Most of their songs are driven by the sound of guitars. Their music is a way to share the stories of the Tuareg people. People often call them music's true rebels because their songs speak of struggle.

The group's sound is based on a style called assouf. This style uses guitars to play traditional West African melodies. The musicians were influenced by regional singers like Rabah Driassa and Ali Farka Touré. They also learned from rock bands like Santana and Bob Dylan. Interestingly, the members did not hear American blues until they traveled the world. They combine these different sounds to create something very special. This mix makes their music feel both ancient and new.

The story of the band began in the late 1970s. Ibrahim Ag Alhabib helped start the group with his bandmates. He once built a guitar using an oil can and a stick.

In the 1980s, the musicians received military training in Libya. During this time, they formed a collective to write songs about their lives. They even made a small studio to record music on cassette tapes. They gave these tapes away for free to anyone who had one. This helped their music spread across the Sahara desert.

Tinariwen became famous all over the world starting in 2001. That year, they released their first big album, The Radio Tisdas Sessions.

They have toured in Europe, North America, Asia, and Australia. The group has been nominated for Grammy Awards three times. In 2012, their album Tassili won the Grammy for Best World Music Album. Their most recent album is called Hoggar, released in 2026. They continue to bring desert music to huge stages around the globe.

Many different people have helped the group grow over the years. They have worked with famous musicians like Bono and Carlos Santana. Some members of the band even recorded music in Joshua Tree National Park. This desert in California felt similar to their home in Mali. The group also includes younger musicians who bring new energy to the band. This helps the music change and grow with each new generation. Tinariwen remains a powerful voice for their culture and their home.
