Ali Farka Touré was a famous singer and musician from the country of Mali.

He was known all over the world for a special style called desert blues. This music mixed traditional sounds from Mali with African American blues. Touré was a master of many instruments, including the guitar and the njarka, which is a stringed instrument. He was so talented that magazines like Spin ranked him as one of the 100 greatest guitarists ever. His music brought people together by sharing the sounds of his home.

Touré learned to play music in many interesting ways. As a boy, he was not allowed to play instruments because of his family's social rank. He did not let this stop him, so he secretly built a monochord from a tin can. Later, he saw a performance by a ballet group in 1956 that inspired him to learn the guitar. He also went to talent contests in the 1960s to hear different musical groups. These contests helped him learn to sing in seven different languages. He even worked as a sound engineer at Radio Mali to help record songs.

His life began in 1939 in the village of Kanau.

His family lived near the Niger River in the Tombouctou region. His parents gave him the nickname "Farka," which means "donkey." They chose this name because donkeys are known for being strong and stubborn. Touré liked this name and said he was a donkey that nobody could climb on. He grew up in the Songhai community and moved to the village of Niafunké as an infant. He worked many jobs, like driving an ambulance boat, before his music career took off.

Touré's music reached many different countries. In the 1980s, a British radio DJ found his "red album" and played it on the BBC. This helped him sign with World Circuit Records and travel to Britain in 1987. He made many famous albums, such as Talking Timbuktu with Ry Cooder in 1994. He also won two Grammy awards for his wonderful work. One of his last albums, Savane, was released after he passed away in 2006. It even became the Album of the Year in Europe for 2006.

Touré's influence is still felt in many places today. His songs have appeared in movies like the Marvel film Black Panther. He was also a kind leader who served as the mayor of Niafunké. He used his own money to fix roads and bring electricity to his town. Today, groups like the Ali Farka Touré Band keep playing his style. There is even a foundation created in his honor to protect his musical legacy. His life shows how music can connect people across the whole world.
