He was born into the Keita royal family in the village of Djoliba. His family traces its long history to Sundiata Keita. Sundiata was the founder of the great Mali Empire. Keïta is a very important cultural icon today. His music brings people together from many different places. He uses his talent to share his unique story with the world.

Keïta's life was not always easy. He was born with albinism, which means his skin is very light. In Mandinka culture, this was seen as a sign of bad luck. Because of this, his family and community cast him out. He also chose to pursue music as a career. This was against the rules for someone of his noble status. These choices made him feel very distant from his family. He had to find a new way to live.

He started his musical journey by moving to Bamako in 1967. He first joined a group called the Super Rail Band de Bamako. In 1973, he joined a band named Les Ambassadeurs. The group later changed its name to Les Ambassadeurs Internationaux. They had to flee Mali during the mid-1970s because of political unrest. They settled in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, to keep working. In 1978, their album Mandjou became a huge success in West Africa.

Keïta moved to Paris in 1984 to reach more people. His music blends West African styles with sounds from Europe and the Americas. He uses many different instruments in his songs. You can hear the kora, which is a string instrument. He also uses the djembe drum and the balafon. Sometimes he plays the saxophone or uses a synthesizer. His 1987 album, Soro, helped him become a star around the world. He even performed at a big tribute concert for Nelson Mandela in 1988.

Keïta uses his music to speak for others. His 2009 album, La Différence, is dedicated to the albino community. He wants people to know that being different is beautiful. He teaches that difference helps us complete each other. After a period of retirement, he came out of it in 2025. He released a new album called So Kono. This record has a very different, quiet sound. It features instruments like the ngoni and the calabash.
