He was born into a royal family. His family traces its roots to Sundiata Keita. He was the founder of the Mali Empire.

Salif was born with albinism. This means he has very light skin. In his culture, people saw this as bad luck. His family and community cast him out. He also chose music even though his status forbade it. This made him more distant from his family.

He moved to Bamako to join a band. Later, he joined a group called Les Ambassadeurs. The band became very popular in West Africa. Their album Mandjou was a big success in 1978. Keita later moved to Paris to sing as a solo artist. His music mixes West African styles with sounds from Europe and America.

He plays many instruments. He uses the kora, which is a string instrument. He also plays the djembe drum and the balafon.
