He was a singer, songwriter, and a master of the guitar. For over 20 years, he led the famous band TPOK Jazz. This group was the most popular and influential band in Africa during its time. People called him the "Grand Maître of Zairean Music" because of his skill. He was also known as the "Sorcerer of the Guitar." His music helped define the sound of Congolese rumba for many people.

Franco had a very special way of playing his instrument. He used a technique called polyrhythmic sophistication to play many rhythms at once. He also used a special way of plucking strings with his thumb and forefinger. This created a sound called the "sebene," which was the exciting part at the end of a song. This style was based on rumba odemba, a tradition from the Mongo people. His unique method became known as the "OK Jazz School" of playing. This helped change the way rumba music sounded across many different countries.

His journey into music started when he was a young boy.

He was born in 1938 in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo. After his father died, he had to stop his school studies. He found work packing records at a studio called Ngoma. While working there, he secretly taught himself to play the guitar. He learned from great musicians like Paul Ebengo Dewayon and Albert Luampasi. These mentors helped him turn his talent into a real career.

Franco's career was full of many famous names and big moments. In 1954, he joined a group called LOPADI, where he got his stage name. He co-founded the band OK Jazz in 1956. Later, the band became known as TPOK Jazz, which means "the almighty Kinshasa jazz orchestra." He released many hits like "Maria Valenta" and "Linda Linda." In 1976, he received a high honor called the Officer of the National Order of the Leopard. Rolling Stone even ranked him as one of the 250 greatest guitarists of all time in 2023.

His music was important because it told the stories of real life. He wrote songs about love, marriage, and how people act toward each other. He also wrote about politics and the changes happening in his country. Even when things were difficult in Kinshasa, his band kept making new music. He used his songs to talk about the world around him. Today, his legacy lives on through his many recordings and a statue in Kinshasa.
