He was a key founder of a music style called Afrobeat. This genre mixes jazz and highlife with many African rhythms. Many people believe he was a master of his craft. The musician Brian Eno even called him perhaps the greatest drummer ever. His unique sound helped shape how people hear African music today. He worked with many different artists all over the world.

Tony had a very special way of playing the drums. He used his four limbs to play many different things at once. This created a complex pattern of rhythms for the music. These patterns came from Yoruba traditions and other parts of Africa. He also blended these rhythms with the heavy groove of soul music. This way of playing made the music feel alive and powerful. It was a style that only he could truly create.

Tony was born in Lagos, Nigeria. His father was a mechanic from Nigeria and his mother was from Ghana.
