He was born Herman Blount on May 22, 1914, in Birmingham, Alabama. He was a very gifted piano player from a young age. By the age of 12, he was already writing his own music. He grew up seeing many great musicians perform in his home city. This early training helped him become a master of his craft. He spent his life making music that was truly unique.

His music was a mix of many different styles. He played ragtime, swing, bebop, and free jazz. He was also a pioneer for using electronic keyboards and synthesizers. These machines helped him create new, strange sounds. He often called his work "space music." He said he used normal instruments in new ways. He wanted to turn musical ideas into a language that people could understand.

Sun Ra lived a life full of mystery and wonder. He chose to leave his birth name behind. He took the name Le Sony'r Ra, which became Sun Ra. This name was inspired by Ra, the Egyptian god of the Sun. He claimed he was actually an alien from the planet Saturn. He said he came to Earth on a mission to preach peace. This special persona made him a leader in a style called Afrofuturism.

He was one of the most hardworking artists of the 20th century. Sun Ra recorded over 100 full-length albums during his career. This included more than 1,000 different songs! He led a musical group called The Arkestra for many years. This group included famous artists like Marshall Allen and June Tyson. Their shows were very theatrical and exciting. Performers often wore bright, futuristic costumes inspired by ancient Egypt and the Space Age.

Sun Ra's influence can still be heard in music today. Even after he retired in 1992, his music stayed important. The Sun Ra Arkestra continued to play after he stopped. As of 2026, the band still performs under Marshall Allen. His work showed how music can connect the past with the future. He proved that even ordinary instruments can reach for the stars. His many recordings remain a treasure for music lovers everywhere.
