They also have roots in Tappan, New York. The group is known for a special sound called Sufi rock. This style mixes loud rock guitars with Eastern musical elements. They use instruments like the tabla, which is a type of drum. They also use raga-inspired melodies and traditional Pakistani folk music. This blend of sounds helped them become one of the most successful bands in South Asia. They have sold more than 30 million records all over the world.

Making their music involves many different layers of sound. The band uses rock guitars and bluesy vocals to create energy. Then, they add Eastern elements like special poetry and folk tunes. For their fifth album, Parvaaz, they even recorded at the famous Abbey Road Studios in London. They worked with producers like John Alec to get the sound just right. Some of their songs are based on the poetry of Bulleh Shah. This careful mixing of styles creates a sound that feels both modern and ancient.

The band's story began with a dream. Salman Ahmad, the founder and lead guitarist, had a dream in 1990. In the dream, a teacher told him he had an obsession for music. Salman had loved rock music since he was eleven years old. He even saved $235 to buy his own electric guitar. He later formed a band called Eclipse with his friend Brian O'Connell. After playing in other groups, Salman started Junoon with singer Ali Azmat and keyboardist Nusrat Hussain.
