They became known for a unique sound that mixed R&B, hip-hop, and funk. This style helped them become one of the five best-selling American girl groups ever. The group's most famous members were Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, and Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas. Their name, TLC, was an initialism using the first letters of their names. They often wore bright colors and unusual clothes in their music videos. For example, they once wore wrapped condoms as part of their costumes. Their music featured different vocal styles working together. T-Boz had deep vocals, Chilli had middle-range vocals, and Left Eye provided rap verses. This mix made their songs stand out on the radio.

The group started in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1990. A producer named Ian Burke and a teenager named Crystal Jones first thought of the group. Tionne Watkins and Lisa Lopes joined them to form a group called "2nd Nature." Later, a manager named Perri "Pebbles" Reid renamed them TLC. The group eventually added Rozonda Thomas, who was a backup dancer. They signed with LaFace Records in 1991. This was the start of their journey toward global stardom.

TLC had many huge hits during their career. Their song "Waterfalls" became the biggest hit they ever had. Other famous songs include "Creep," "No Scrubs," and "Unpretty."

Their second album, CrazySexyCool, was a massive success in 1994. It earned a diamond certification from the RIAA. This means it sold a huge number of copies in the United States. They also won five Grammy Awards and five MTV Video Music Awards. They were even named the seventh-most-successful act of the 1990s by Billboard.

Life was not always easy for the group members. They faced many hard jobs and personal struggles. Tionne Watkins had to manage a blood disorder called sickle-cell anemia. The group also dealt with money problems and filed for bankruptcy in 1995. In 2002, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes passed away. Instead of replacing her, T-Boz and Chilli chose to continue as a duo. They released a new album called TLC in 2017.
