Formed in New York City in 1985, the trio consisted of Salt (Cheryl James), Pepa (Sandra Denton), and DJ Spinderella (Deidra Roper). They earned the honorific title "The First Ladies of Rap." This name reflects their massive influence on hip hop culture. They were among the first female rap acts to achieve widespread commercial success. Their music helped change the landscape of the genre for women. Throughout their career, they sold more than 15 million records worldwide.

The group's formation began with a chance meeting in a lunchroom. Sandra Denton was working as a telephone solicitor at a Sears store. She met Cheryl James there while they were both nursing students at Queensborough Community College. They were also co-workers with future stars Kid N' Play and Martin Lawrence. A music production student named Hurby "Luv Bug" Azor recorded the two women for a class project. This recording became the song "The Showstopper." The track used a melody from the 1984 film Revenge of the Nerds. After the song became popular on New York radio, the women decided to pursue music full-time.

To build a complete group, Azor recruited DJ Latoya Hanson, known as Spinderella, to join the act. The group's name came from the lyrics of their early work. They signed with Next Plateau Records in 1985. Their debut album, Hot, Cool & Vicious, was released in December 1986. This album featured the hit single "Push It." A remix by producer Cameron Paul helped the song reach the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. The success of this single helped the album reach platinum status in the United States. It sold over 1 million copies in the U.S. and 1.4 million copies globally.

Salt-N-Pepa released several successful albums during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Their second album, A Salt with a Deadly Pepa (1988), earned gold status in the U.S. with 500,000 copies sold there. Their third album, Blacks' Magic (1990), allowed the members to take more control. Salt and Spinderella took on producing assignments for the first time. This album included the hit "Let's Talk About Sex," which was later re-recorded as "Let's Talk About AIDS" for awareness. The album sold 1.6 million copies worldwide. These releases established the group as a consistent force in the music industry.

The group reached a new peak of success with their fourth album, Very Necessary. Released in 1993 on London Records, it featured hits like "Shoop" and "Whatta Man." This album sold more than 7 million copies worldwide. Of those, 5 million were sold in the United States. This achievement made them the first female rap act to have a multi-platinum certified album. At that time, it was the highest-selling rap album by a female act in history. Their popularity during this era led to several film appearances and major tours.

Their musical excellence was recognized by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the Grammy Awards. In 1995, they won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. They won for their song "None of Your Business." This made them one of the first female rap acts to win a Grammy. In 2021, they received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Their long-term impact on music was further honored in 2025. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for their Musical Influence.

Salt-N-Pepa's career also involved navigating the business side of the music industry. They eventually broke away from their original producer, Hurby Azor, due to disputes over royalty payments. They later signed with Red Ant Records for their album Brand New in 1997. This deal included a $15 million signing bonus. Although the label faced financial difficulties and bankruptcy, the album still reached gold status in the U.S. Their journey shows how hip hop artists transitioned from independent labels to major global stardom. They remain one of the best-selling rap acts of all time.
