They formed in Roosevelt, New York, in 1985. The group is known for using music to deliver intense political messages. Their lyrics often address American racism and the influence of the media. This purposeful approach helped define the group's identity. They seek to engage listeners in social and political thought. Their work is considered a vital part of hip-hop history.

The group's sound is built through a specific collaborative process. Chuck D and Flavor Flav serve as the core members. The production team, known as the Bomb Squad, creates the musical backing. This team included Hank Shocklee, Keith Shocklee, and Eric "Vietnam" Sadler. They work alongside Professor Griff, who held the title of Minister of Information. A DJ provides the rhythmic foundation for the performances. The original DJ was Terminator X. He was later replaced by DJ Lord in 1998.

Public Enemy also features a specialized group called the S1W. This stands for Security of the First World. The name represents the idea that Black people are intelligent and strong. It asserts that they are first-world, original people rather than third-world people. This group adds a sense of strength and discipline to their presence. The group's structure allows them to present a unified social message. This organization is central to their live performances and recordings.

The group's origins trace back to the mid-1980s at Adelphi University. Chuck D and Flavor Flav met there while developing their skills. Before forming Public Enemy, they performed as Spectrum City. Chuck D once created a tape titled "Public Enemy Number One." He used this name because he felt persecuted by the local music scene. This concept of a "public enemy" became the foundation for the group's name. Eventually, producer Rick Rubin helped sign the group to a label.

Public Enemy achieved massive success through several landmark albums. Their 1987 debut was titled "Yo! Bum Rush the Show." Their 1988 follow-up, "It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back," was a major milestone. It was the first hip-hop album to top the Pazz & Jop critics' poll. Their 1990 album, "Fear of a Black Planet," was even more successful. This album was later selected for the National Recording Registry for preservation. It features the famous song "Fight the Power," which was the theme for the film "Do the Right Thing."

Throughout their career, the group has released many different types of projects. They have released over twenty studio albums in total. Some albums, like "There's a Poison Goin' On" in 1999, were released only as digital downloads. They also produced soundtracks, such as the one for the 1998 film "He Got Game." Their music has reached high positions on international charts. For example, their song "Harder Than You Think" reached number 4 on the UK Singles Chart in 2012. This success came after the song was used in a Paralympics advertisement.

The group's impact is recognized by major musical institutions. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013. They also received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at the 62nd Grammy Awards. Critics have described them as the most radical and influential band of their era. Even as members like Terminator X retired to run a farm, the group continued. Chuck D even launched PE 2.0 with the rapper Jahi to carry on the legacy. Their music remains a significant force in the study of social justice and hip-hop culture.
