The Sugarhill Gang is an influential American hip-hop group. They formed in Englewood, New Jersey, in 1979. The group is famous for helping bring rap music into the mainstream. Their most important achievement was the song "Rapper's Delight." This track was the first rap single to reach the top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100. It reached the number 36 position on January 12, 1980. Many historians now consider this song one of the most significant rap songs ever made.

The group was created by a producer named Sylvia Robinson. She founded Sugar Hill Records alongside her husband, Joe Robinson. The name of the group and the record label came from Sugar Hill. This is a neighborhood located in Harlem. The original trio consisted of three specific members. They were Henry "Big Bank Hank" Jackson, Michael "Wonder Mike" Wright, and Guy "Master Gee" O'Brien. Each member brought a unique presence to the group's early sound.

While "Rapper's Delight" was their only top 40 hit in the United States, the group found great success in Europe. They released several notable singles during the early 1980s. These included the song "Apache" and the track "8th Wonder." They also released "Rapper's Reprise (Jam Jam)" and a song called "Showdown" with the group The Furious Five. In 1981, they performed "8th Wonder" on the American music program Soul Train. This helped maintain their visibility as a performing act. The group eventually disbanded in 1985 after five years of activity.

After the group ended, the members experienced various reunions and legal challenges. In 1990, they performed at the Apollo Theater in New York City for the "RapMania" concert. In 1994, Joey Robinson reformed the group. This new version recorded a hip-hop album for children called "Jump On It!" in 1999. However, this period was marked by complex disputes over professional identities. Joey Robinson began performing under the stage name "Master Gee." This caused frustration for the original Guy O'Brien. Robinson also trademarked the names "Master Gee" and "Wonder Mike."

These disagreements led to significant legal action. O'Brien and Wright went to court to reclaim the rights to their own stage names. In 2005, Michael Wright left Sugar Hill Records. He eventually reunited with O'Brien to perform as "Rapper's Delight Featuring Wonder Mike and Master Gee." This was necessary because Joey Robinson was performing as the "Sugarhill Gang" at the same time. The record company claimed the copyright to the group's original name. Eventually, the group reacquired the rights to the name "Sugarhill Gang." They used this name to release "Lala Song" with producer Bob Sinclar in 2009.

The group faced personal loss during their later years. Henry "Big Bank Hank" Jackson died on November 11, 2014. He was 58 years old at the time of his death. He had been fighting a long battle with cancer. Despite this, the group continued to perform for global audiences. In 2016, Wright, O'Brien, and producer Henry "Hen Dogg" Williams began a world tour. They performed at the Art of Rap festival and the V Festival in the United Kingdom. They also played at the Clockenflap Festival in Hong Kong on November 27, 2016.

The group's legacy continued through major anniversaries and special events. In 2019, they celebrated the 40th anniversary of their formation and their hit song. They launched the "Rapper's Delight 40th Anniversary World Tour," which ran from May 24 to July 26, 2019. During this year, they also released new music. They performed on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" on October 25, 2019. More recently, they played the halftime show for an Arizona Cardinals and Baltimore Ravens game in October 2023.

Their studio albums include "Sugarhill Gang" (1980), "8th Wonder" (1981), "Rappin' Down Town" (1983), "Livin' in the Fast Lane" (1984), and "Jump On It!" (1999). Their music history is tied to the evolution of the entire hip-hop genre. They helped establish the foundation for how rap music is produced and shared globally.
