They formed in Englewood, New Jersey, in 1979. This group helped make rap music known to the whole world. Their most famous song is called "Rapper's Delight." It was a very big deal for music history. It was the first rap single to reach the top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100. It hit number 36 on January 12, 1980. Many people say it is one of the most important rap songs ever made.

Making the group was a big job for a producer.

Sylvia Robinson put the trio together. She started a record company called Sugar Hill Records with her husband, Joe Robinson. The group had three main members. They were Henry "Big Bank Hank" Jackson, Michael "Wonder Mike" Wright, and Guy "Master Gee" O'Brien. They chose their group name from a place in Harlem called Sugar Hill. This name helped connect their music to a real neighborhood.

After their first big hit, the group had more success in Europe.

They made songs like "Apache" and "8th Wonder." They even performed "8th Wonder" on a music show called Soul Train in 1981. The group eventually went their separate ways in 1985. Later, they tried to come back together many times. In 1990, they played a concert at the Apollo Theater in New York City. In 1994, Joey Robinson helped reform the group for new music.

There were some hard times for the members later on.

Some members had to go to court to get their stage names back. This happened because of disagreements over who owned the names "Master Gee" and "Wonder Mike." In 2009, they released a song called "Lala Song" with a producer named Bob Sinclar. Sadly, Big Bank Hank passed away in 2014 after fighting cancer. He was 58 years old at that time. The group kept moving forward despite these losses.

Even after many years, the group still performs for fans.

In 2019, they celebrated 40 years of their music with a special tour. They even performed on the show Jimmy Kimmel Live! in October of that year. Today, the group continues to share their hip-hop history with new listeners.
