The group featured two singers named Mie and Kei. They were childhood friends from Shizuoka Prefecture. They even attended the Yamaha Music School together in Hamamatsu. People loved them for their catchy pop songs and disco sounds. They were also famous for their perfectly synchronized dances. This means they moved together in a very precise way. They became true icons of the Japanese pop star style.

Becoming a star involved a lot of hard work and changes. At first, they were a folk group wearing bib overalls. They appeared on the talent show Star Tanjō! in 1976. After that, their image changed completely to match their new music. They began wearing beaded, short-skirted white dresses. Their producer, Shunichi Tokura, gave them the name Pink Lady. He chose the name after a specific cocktail. They performed upbeat songs with catchy hooks that people could easily sing.

The duo's rise to fame happened very quickly in the late 1970s. They had a long streak of nine number one hits. Their song "UFO" was their biggest hit with 1.95 million copies sold. They even held a record for staying at number one for 63 weeks. In 1978, they played a huge concert in Tokyo for 100,000 fans. They were also very busy with commercials for items like ramen noodles. One time, their mention of oolong tea caused a huge jump in sales for Ito En.

Pink Lady also traveled far beyond Japan to share their music. In 1980, they went to the United States to try a new market. They had a variety show on NBC called Pink Lady and Jeff. During this time, their song "Kiss in the Dark" reached number 37 on the Billboard Top 40. This was a very big deal for Japanese artists. They were one of only two Japanese acts to reach that chart back then.

They were also the first Japanese act to perform in Seoul, South Korea.

Even though they were superstars, their lives were very hectic. They often hosted many different TV shows in a single day. Sometimes, they only had about 45 minutes of sleep each day. This busy lifestyle led to the term "Pink Lady Schedule" in the entertainment world. After they disbanded, the two friends went on several reunions. They reunited in 1984, 1989, 1996, and 2003. They even had a popular pachinko game based on them. Their music and dancing left a lasting mark on pop culture.
