They helped start a new era of hip-hop. This period is often called the golden age. Their music helped other groups like LL Cool J succeed. They were one of the most important acts of the 1980s.

Making their music was a special way of working. Jam Master Jay created many of the sounds. He made the beats that the rappers performed over. The group also mixed different kinds of music together. They combined hip-hop with hard rock music. This style was very new at the time. One famous song was "Walk This Way." They performed this song with the rock band Aerosmith.

This song reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. It helped rock fans and hip-hop fans enjoy music together.

Their story began in the late 1970s in New York. The members used to hang out at Two-Fifths Park. They wanted to rap for the local DJs there. Joseph Simmons started as a DJ for Kurtis Blow. Darryl McDaniels loved athletics but started DJing with turntables. He eventually began writing rhymes as "Easy D." The three friends met at the park and became a team. In 1983, they signed a record deal. They used the name Run-DMC for their group.

Run-DMC reached many big goals very quickly. They were the first hip-hop group to get a Gold record. Their 1984 album was called Run-D.M.C. In 1985, they became the first group to go platinum. Their album King of Rock earned this title. Their 1986 album Raising Hell was even bigger. It was the first multi-platinum hip-hop record. The group also changed how people dressed. They wore Kangol hats and leather jackets. They famously wore unlaced Adidas shoes.

This led to a $1,600,000 deal with Adidas.

Today, we remember them as legends of music. They were the first hip-hop act on MTV. They even appeared on the show American Bandstand. In 2009, they joined the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This is a very special place for great musicians. They also won a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016. Their album Raising Hell is kept in the National Recording Registry. This means it is considered very important to history.
