Three 6 Mafia is an influential American hip-hop group from Memphis, Tennessee. Formed in 1991, the group began as an underground collective known for a dark, horror-themed sound. This specific style is often called horrorcore, which uses bleak and dark imagery in its music. Over time, the group transitioned from these underground roots to achieve massive mainstream success. They are credited with helping to develop crunk, a high-energy production style designed for dance clubs.

The creation of their music involved diverse musical talents and self-driven distribution. In the early years, members utilized classical and rock training to build their sound. DJ Paul played the piano and drums, while Lord Infamous contributed bass, electric guitar, and vocals. Juicy J focused on DJing and rapping, eventually influencing the crunk genre. To share their work, they produced and distributed their own mixtapes at local schools and clubs. They also established their own independent record labels, such as Hypnotize Minds, to manage their professional careers.

The group's lineup evolved through several distinct stages and iterations. It began with the duo Da Serial Killaz, consisting of DJ Paul and Lord Infamous. They later formed The Backyard Posse, which eventually became the foundation for Three 6 Mafia. The group's roster expanded to include members like Koopsta Knicca, Crunchy Black, and Gangsta Boo. At various times, they were associated with the Prophet Posse and the Hypnotize Camp Posse. These were collectives of local Memphis rappers who worked closely with the core members.

The history of the group is rooted in the late 1980s in Memphis. DJ Paul began piano lessons at age 11, while Lord Infamous was a 15-year-old singer. Juicy J was 13 years old when he began learning to DJ and rap. In 1989, DJ Paul and Lord Infamous began working as a duo. By 1991, DJ Paul was performing at local venues like Club 380 Beale. The group officially adopted the name Three 6 Mafia after Lord Infamous used the term "Triple Six Mafia" during a recording session in 1993.

Three 6 Mafia achieved significant commercial milestones throughout their career. Their 1995 debut album, Mystic Stylez, became an influential cult classic. Two of their albums reached RIAA platinum status, signifying they sold over one million copies each. These albums were When the Smoke Clears: Sixty 6, Sixty 1 (2000) and Most Known Unknown (2005). The latter featured the popular single "Stay Fly." As of 2016, the group's total worldwide album sales reached 5.5 million copies.

A major highlight of their career occurred in 2006 at the 78th Academy Awards. The group won the Oscar for Best Original Song for "It's Hard out Here for a Pimp." This track was written for the film Hustle & Flow. This achievement marked a peak in their transition from underground horrorcore to global recognition. Other notable works include the Gold-certified album Da Unbreakables, which featured the hit "Ridin' Spinners."

The influence of Three 6 Mafia extends into broader music industry systems and culture. They navigated complex relationships with various record labels, including Relativity, Loud, and Columbia Records. Their work helped define the Memphis hip-hop scene and the broader crunk movement. By creating their own imprint, Hypnotize Minds, they demonstrated how independent artists could build a powerhouse brand. Their music continues to connect local Memphis sounds to global hip-hop audiences through film, radio, and club culture.
