Outkast was a highly influential American hip-hop duo from Atlanta, Georgia.

The group consisted of Antwan "Big Boi" Patton and André "André 3000" Benjamin. They are widely regarded as one of the greatest acts in hip-hop history. The duo achieved massive critical acclaim and commercial success from the mid-1990s to the mid-2000s. They helped popularize Southern hip-hop through intricate lyricism and memorable melodies. Their music was unique because it experimented with many different genres. They blended hip-hop with funk, psychedelia, jazz, and even techno music.

The group's formation began in 1992 when both members were sixteen years old. They met as teenagers at the Lenox Square shopping mall in Atlanta. Both Patton and Benjamin attended Tri-Cities High School. During their school years, they participated in rap battles in the cafeteria. They initially considered the name "2 Shades Deep." However, they chose the name Outkast because they had a unique fashion style compared to their classmates. They also worked with a local producer group called Organized Noize. This collaboration helped form the nucleus of a larger organization known as the Dungeon Family.

Outkast released several distinct albums that showed their musical growth. Their debut studio album, Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, arrived in 1994. This album featured the hit single "Player's Ball," which topped the Billboard Hot Rap Songs chart. Their second album, ATLiens, was released in 1996 and featured a spacey, futuristic sound. This record was influenced by dub and reggae music. Their third album, Aquemini, came out in 1998. The title was a combination of their zodiac signs: Big Boi is an Aquarius and André is a Gemini.

Each album allowed them to explore different musical directions and personal identities.

In 2000, the duo reached mainstream heights with their fourth album, Stankonia. This album had more commercial appeal compared to their earlier, darker works. It featured the high-tempo single "B.O.B." and the massive pop hit "Ms. Jackson." The song "Ms. Jackson" topped the Billboard Hot 100 and won a Grammy Award.

Their next major project was the 2003 double album, Speakerboxxx/The Love Below. This was their only album to debut at number one on the Billboard 200. It earned a Diamond certification from the RIAA, which signifies very high sales. The album included the famous single "Hey Ya!" performed by André 3000.

Throughout their career, Outkast achieved significant statistical success. They earned six Grammy Awards for their musical contributions. Between their six studio albums and one compilation album, they achieved certified sales of 20 million records.

Their impact on the music industry is reflected in various rankings. Rolling Stone ranked them as the number seven greatest duo of all time. They were also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on November 8, 2025. These numbers and honors demonstrate their lasting influence on global music culture.

There are several notable moments that define the group's legacy. At the 1995 Source Awards, André 3000 made a famous statement during a time of tension between East Coast and West Coast hip-hop. He told the crowd, "The South got something to say." This moment is often credited with making people take Southern rap seriously.

The duo also ventured into film by starring in the 2006 musical Idlewild. They recorded the soundtrack for the movie, which served as their final album before they split in 2007. Even after their split, they reunited in 2014 for many worldwide festivals, including Coachella.

Outkast's work connects to many broader cultural and musical systems. They helped bridge the gap between hip-hop and other genres like soul and electro. Their music also connected hip-hop to the history of the black freedom struggle. For example, their song "Rosa Parks" explored these important themes. By combining diverse sounds, they changed how hip-hop was produced and perceived globally. They proved that Southern artists could lead the entire music industry.
