Thomas Peters was a remarkable leader who helped build a new nation. He was born in West Africa to the Yoruba tribe. Sadly, he was captured by slave traders when he was young. He was brought to North America on a ship called the Henri Quatre. He was sold in Louisiana before moving to North Carolina. In 1776, he escaped from a flour mill near Wilmington. This was the start of a very important journey for him.

During the American Revolutionary War, Peters joined the Black Pioneers. This was a unit of Black Loyalists who fought for the British. The British promised freedom to slaves who joined their side. Peters worked hard and rose to the rank of sergeant. He was even wounded twice during battles. While serving, he met a woman named Sally from South Carolina. They married and had two children named Clairy and John.

After the war ended, the British moved Peters and many others to Nova Scotia. They were part of a group of three thousand former slaves. The British government promised them land and supplies to help them. However, these promises were often broken. Peters and his friend Murphy Steele asked the government for the land they were owed. Peters felt it was very unfair that the promises were not kept. He decided he must take action to help his people.

In 1791, Peters traveled all the way to London, England. He gathered many signatures from settlers to show his cause. In London, he met important people like General Henry Clinton. He worked with a man named Granville Sharp to find a solution. They decided to help Black settlers move to a new colony in West Africa. This new place became the nation of Sierra Leone. It was a huge step toward a new beginning.

In 1792, over 1,100 people sailed to West Africa to start Freetown. Some people say Peters led them ashore while singing a hymn. He became a very important figure in this new settlement. Even though he faced hard times and sickness, his work changed history. Today, he is called a founding father of Sierra Leone. Many people in the Krio community are his descendants. He is remembered as a true hero of his time.
