Thomas Peters was a brave leader. He was born in West Africa. Long ago, he was taken as a slave. He was brought to North America.

In 1776, Peters escaped from a mill in North Carolina. He joined the Black Pioneers. This was a group of Black soldiers. They fought for the British. Peters rose to the rank of sergeant. He was wounded twice in battle. During the war, he met Sally. She was also a refugee. They married and had two children.

After the war, Peters moved to Nova Scotia. The British promised land to the Black Loyalists. But the promises were not kept. Peters felt this was unfair. He went to London to ask for help. He spoke to important people there.

He helped start a new home in West Africa. This place is now called Sierra Leone. Many people moved there in 1792. Peters is a founding father of that nation. Many people today call him a hero.
