He lived during a very busy time in history called the French Revolutionary Wars. Dumas was a man of African descent. His mother, Marie-Cessette Dumas, was an enslaved woman. His father was a French nobleman named Marquis Alexandre Antoine Davy de la Pailleterie. Because of his mother's status, Dumas was born into slavery in Saint-Domingue. This place is now known as Haiti. His father took him to France in 1776 so he could be educated. In France, a rule meant that any slave who set foot on the land would be freed.

Dumas worked very hard to rise through the military ranks. He joined the army in 1786 as a simple private. He was only 24 years old at that time. He moved up very quickly because of his skill. On July 30, 1793, he became a brigadier general. This was the first time a person of color reached this rank in the French military. Just one month later, he became a general of division. By the time he was 31, he was the General-in-Chief of the Army of the Alps. He led a massive group of 53,000 troops.

He was known for being a very brave and successful commander. In 1794, he won a big victory by opening high mountain passes in the Alps. This helped the French start a new campaign against the Austrian Empire. In March 1797, he fought a famous battle at a bridge in Clausen, Italy. He defeated a group of enemy troops there. Because he was such a strong fighter, the Austrian troops gave him a nickname. They called him the "Black Devil." Other people, including the leader Napoleon, called him a hero.

Dumas also traveled to Egypt to lead cavalry forces between 1798 and 1801. During this time, he had a verbal disagreement with Napoleon Bonaparte. In March 1799, Dumas left Egypt on a ship that was not in good shape. The ship ran aground in the Kingdom of Naples. Dumas was taken prisoner and held in a dungeon. He stayed there until the spring of 1801. After he was finally released, he returned to France to be with his family.
