The Teenagers

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Teenagers were a famous American music group. They sang a style called doo-wop. This music relies on beautiful vocal harmonies. The group was very special in the history of rock music. They were the first all-teenaged act to find big success. Their music was shared with the whole world by a DJ named Alan Freed.

Making their music was a team effort. The group used harmony and choreography to perform. Choreography is a set of planned dance moves. They were known for both their singing and their dancing. In 1954, young Frankie Lymon joined the group. He helped rewrite the song "Why Do Fools Fall In Love." This song became their biggest hit.

This group started in New York City. They began as a group called the Earth Angels. This group formed at Edward W. Stitt Junior High School. It was in the Washington Heights part of Manhattan. Members Jimmy Merchant and Sherman Garnes started it. They later became a group called the Coupe De Villes. Eventually, they changed their name to the Ermines and then the Premiers. Finally, they became The Teenagers.

Many important dates and numbers define their story. In 1956, "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" hit number seven on the Billboard Hot 100. This was a very big achievement. Frankie Lymon was only 13 years old during this time. He was the first Black teenage pop star. Later, the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.

The group's story changed many times over the years. In 1957, they were called "Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers." This led to some fighting within the group. Lymon eventually recorded music by himself. The group continued with new members like Billy Lobrano. He was the first white member of the group. This made the band more ethnically mixed. The group has different members in its long history.
