They were known for a sweet and innocent sound. This sound came from their soft, tight harmonies. Many of their songs used beautiful strings. They even included rhythms from Brazilian baião music. Their music helped start the girl group genre. They paved the way for many female pop stars. People loved their music because it felt very real.

The group began in Passaic, New Jersey, in 1957. Four schoolmates formed the group for a talent show. These girls were Shirley Owens, Doris Coley, Addie Harris, and Beverly Lee. They first sang as the Poquellos. A classmate named Mary Jane Greenberg helped them meet a record owner. Her mother, Florence Greenberg, owned Tiara Records. The girls eventually changed their name to the Shirelles. This name used the first part of Shirley's name.
