They formed in Passaic, New Jersey, in 1957. The group is credited with launching the girl group genre. Their music helped define the essence of this new style. They were famous for a "naive schoolgirl sound." This meant their vocals sounded sweet and innocent. This style often contrasted with the sexual themes in their lyrics.

The group's sound relied on specific musical elements. They used tight, soft harmonies. Many of their recordings featured orchestral strings. They also incorporated syncopation from Brazilian baião music. This is a type of Brazilian rhythm. Shirley Owens provided the lead vocals. Her voice was described as expressive and vulnerable. Some critics noted she sounded almost, but not quite, out of tune. This unique quality added to their innocent image.

The group's journey began at Passaic High School. Four schoolmates formed the group for a talent show. The members were Shirley Owens, Doris Coley, Addie "Micki" Harris, and Beverly Lee. They originally performed under the name the Poquellos. A classmate named Mary Jane Greenberg helped them meet Florence Greenberg. Florence was the owner of Tiara Records. The girls eventually changed their name to the Shirelles. This name combined the first syllable of Shirley's name with "-el."

Their professional career involved several different record labels. Their first single was "I Met Him on a Sunday." It was released in 1958 through Tiara and Decca Records. After some unsuccessful periods, they moved to Scepter Records. This move happened after Florence Greenberg formed the new company. At Scepter, they worked with producer Luther Dixon. Dixon had previously worked with artists like Nat King Cole. This collaboration led to their greatest period of fame.

The Shirelles achieved significant commercial success with many hits. They achieved seven top 20 hits on the music charts. Their song "Tonight's the Night" peaked at number 39 in 1960. This was followed by the massive hit "Will You Love Me Tomorrow." This song was written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King. It became the first number-one hit by an African-American girl group. They also had a hit titled "Dedicated to the One I Love." This song eventually reached number 3 on the charts.

Despite their success, the group faced difficult challenges. In 1963, they discovered a trust for their royalties did not exist. This trust was supposed to pay them on their 21st birthdays. The group felt deceived by Scepter Records. They filed a breach of contract suit against the company. Both sides eventually withdrew their legal actions in 1965. Later, the group faced heavy competition from the British Invasion. They also faced competition from other groups like the Supremes.

The impact of the Shirelles reached far beyond the music charts. Their music was accepted by both white and black audiences. This success reflected the early progress of the Civil Rights Movement. Even the Beatles were major admirers of their work. George Harrison said they developed their harmonies by studying American girl groups. The group received many prestigious honors over the years. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. In 2022, the Library of Congress selected their album for preservation. This recognizes their work as culturally and historically significant.
