The Miracles were a famous American vocal group from Detroit, Michigan. They were the very first successful recording act for Motown Records. This group helped change the history of pop, soul, and rhythm and blues music. Many people call them Motown's "soul supergroup" because they were so talented. Their music helped more people across the United States enjoy R&B and pop songs. They were so good at performing that fans called them "The Showstoppers."

Making music as a group took a lot of hard work and skill. The members did not just sing the songs they were given. Instead, they often wrote their own music together. Smokey Robinson, Ronnie White, Bobby Rogers, Pete Moore, and Marv Tarplin wrote many songs. They even wrote famous hits for other Motown stars like The Temptations and Marvin Gaye. To make their live shows look great, they even worked with a dance teacher named Cholly Atkins. This helped them become great performers on stage.

The story of the group began back in 1955. Five teenage friends from Detroit first started singing together as the Five Chimes. Three of these friends had been singing together since they were only eleven years old. They later changed their name to the Matadors for a short time. In 1958, they added Claudette Rogers to the group and became the Miracles. This happened after Sonny Rogers left to join the United States Army. The group's lineup became complete when they added the guitarist Marv Tarplin.

The Miracles had many huge successes on the music charts. Their song "Shop Around" was a massive hit in 1960. It was the very first Motown song to sell one million copies. They had many other hits, like "You've Really Got a Hold on Me" and "Mickey's Monkey." In 1967, their song "The Tears of a Clown" reached number one on the pop charts. They recorded more than 50 songs that appeared on the music charts. This included 26 songs that reached the Top 40 pop list.

Today, we remember the Miracles as one of the most important musical groups ever. They won many big awards for their great songs and talent. Four of their songs were even put into the Grammy Hall of Fame. They also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2009. In 2012, the group was finally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Their music paved the way for all the other Motown stars that came later.
