He helped move rhythm and blues into the soul music style. People called him "Mr. Excitement" because he was a master showman. He did not just stand and sing for his fans. He used his whole body to perform with huge energy. His shows included spins, back-flips, and sliding across the floor on one foot. He even did knee-drops and used boxing steps to move. This electric style inspired many famous stars like Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson.

Wilson had a very special and powerful singing voice. He was known for an operatic, multi-octave range. This means he could sing many different high and low notes. Some of his most famous songs include "Lonely Teardrops" and "Reet Petite." He also sang "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher." His song "Lonely Teardrops" sold over one million copies. It even won a gold disc from the RIAA. His voice was so good that NPR called him one of the "50 Great Voices."

His journey began in Highland Park, Michigan, in 1934.

As a boy, he sang in church groups. He was influenced by the choir at Billups Chapel. Later, he joined a group called the Dominoes in 1953. He replaced a very popular singer named Clyde McPhatter. McPhatter actually helped teach Wilson how to sing with a certain style. In 1957, Wilson decided to start his career as a solo singer. He signed with Brunswick Records and became a massive star.

Wilson had a very successful career with many big numbers. He had more than 50 hits on the music charts. He earned 16 top-10 R&B hits, and six of those were number one hits. On the pop charts, he had 14 top-20 hits.

Elvis Presley was a big fan of Wilson's stage moves. Presley even said that he was like a "white Jackie Wilson." In 2004, a magazine called Rolling Stone ranked him as one of the 100 greatest artists of all time. His music and his energy still live on through the artists he inspired.
