He was born Richard Steven Valenzuela in 1941. His parents were from Sonora, Mexico. They were of Yaqui indigenous ancestry. They moved to the United States to find a better life. Ritchie grew up hearing many kinds of music. He heard Mexican mariachi and flamenco guitar. He also loved R&B and jump blues. He showed an interest in making music by age five.

Making music was a big part of his life. His father encouraged him to play the trumpet and guitar. Ritchie even taught himself how to play the drums. He was left-handed, but he learned to play a right-handed guitar. He was a self-taught musician. This means he learned many skills on his own. When he played, he often added his own new parts to songs. He would improvise new lyrics while he performed for people.

His music career grew very fast in the late 1950s. A record label owner named Bob Keane discovered him in 1958. Keane signed him to Del-Fi Records in May 1958. To make his name stand out, he became Ritchie Valens. He recorded his first songs at Gold Star Studios. One of his biggest hits was "La Bamba."

He turned a Mexican folk song into a rock song. He learned the Spanish words by sound since he spoke English at home.

Valens became a star very quickly. He had a hit song called "Donna" about his girlfriend. That song and "La Bamba" sold over one million copies. He appeared on many television shows like American Bandstand. In early 1959, he went on the Winter Dance Party tour.

This tour was very hard because of freezing weather. The tour buses broke down in the cold. On February 3, 1959, Valens died in a plane crash in Iowa. He was only 17 years old. This tragic day is known as "The Day the Music Died."

Even though he died young, his music changed everything. He was a pioneer for Chicano rock. This means he helped start a movement for Latino artists. He was the first Latino to become a mainstream rock star. Many famous musicians like Carlos Santana were inspired by him.
