Lymon's solo career saw little success, and he struggled with heroin addiction. He died of a heroin overdose on February 27, 1968, at the age of 25.

The Teenagers continued to perform with many different members through the following decades. They added Billy Lobrano, who was the group's first non-Hispanic white member. This made the lineup more ethnically mixed, containing two non-Hispanic Black, one non-Hispanic white, and two Hispanic members. In the 1980s, the group even used a female singer, Pearl McKinnon, to imitate Lymon's high voice. The group saw many different lead singers, including Jimmy Castor and Timothy Wilson.
