It is a very important piece of his career. Miró called it a summary of his entire life in the countryside. The painting shows a masia, which is a traditional Catalan farmhouse. His family has owned this farmhouse since 1911. The work captures the feeling of the land and the daily life there. It is a way for him to show his deep connection to the rural world.

Miró used a very careful way of painting called the "detailist" period. He worked on this single canvas for nine months of tough preparation. He painted every single leaf on the large eucalyptus tree. He even painted every blade of grass and every rock in the field. In the center, a large tree grows from a black circle. This contrasts with a white circle that represents the sun in the sky. You can even see the tiny cracks in the plastered walls of the house. The painting shows many animals like a dog, a goat, and a rabbit. It also includes snails, insects, and lizards.

Miró began this work during a special time in his life. He started it in the summer of 1921 in Mont-roig del Camp. He then traveled to France and finished it in Paris during the winter of 1922. He was 29 years old when he completed this masterpiece. The painting was first shown at the Salon d'Automne in Paris in 1922. Miró spent his summers in Mont-roig del Camp while living in Paris. This helped him balance his life between the city and the country. The objects in the painting became symbols he used in many other works.

This painting has a very interesting history of owners. Miró needed to sell it to support himself. An art dealer named Léonce Rosenberg suggested cutting the canvas into small pieces to sell it. Miró was very angry about this idea. Instead, he took it to a gallery and sold it to the writer Ernest Hemingway. Hemingway paid five thousand French francs for the painting. He bought it as a birthday present for his wife, Hadley. Hemingway loved the work and said it captured how one feels about Spain.

Today, The Farm lives in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. It was given to the museum in 1987 by Mary Hemingway. The family farmhouse, Mas Miró, is also very special today. In 2006, it was named a Cultural Asset of National Interest. The family wants to turn the house into a living museum. Visitors will see personal items and recreations of his famous works. The house is even full of drawings that Miró used as drafts. This painting remains a bridge between his life in Spain and his art in France.
