Pedro Romero Martínez was a famous bullfighter from Spain. He was born on November 19, 1754. He came from a family of toreros, which are bullfighters. His father and two brothers all did this work. His grandfather, Francisco, helped improve the use of the muleta. The muleta is a cloth used in the ring. This family tradition made Pedro a skilled performer.

Pedro was known for more than just being brave. He was the first matador to treat bullfighting as an art form. He did not just show courage to the crowd. He also showed great skill and beauty in his moves. In 1776, he killed 285 bulls. This helped him build a very strong reputation. He is said to have fought 5,558 bulls. He did all this without any serious injury.

Pedro began his career when he was very young. He fought in Algeciras and Seville in 1772. In 1775, he fought in Madrid. He worked there with his father and a man named Costillares. These early fights helped him learn his craft. He continued this career for many years. He finally retired from the ring in 1799.

After he stopped fighting, Pedro became a teacher. He led a bullfighting school in Seville. This school ran from 1830 to 1832. Even though it was short, it had a huge influence. He shared his knowledge with students who were training. He is credited with starting the classical style of bullfighting. This style began at the School of Ronda.

Pedro's name is still linked to the bullring today. He was a very long-lived man. He fought in a ring in Madrid at age eighty. This was likely his very last corrida, or bullfight. A famous writer named Ernest Hemingway wrote about him too. Hemingway wrote a book called The Sun Also Rises. It has a character named Pedro Romero. Many people think this character was based on the real man.
