Even though he did not write many books, his work is very important. He is known for making stories about life in rural Mexico. His writing style is often called spare and realistic. This means he used simple words to describe hard places and people. His stories feel universal, which means they touch on feelings everyone understands. Many famous writers studied his work to learn how to tell great stories.

He wrote two very famous books that changed literature. His first major work was a collection of short stories called El Llano en llamas, or The Burning Plain, in 1953. These stories look at life in the countryside during the Mexican Revolution. One story, "¡Diles que no me maten!", tells of an old man facing execution. Another story, "No oyes ladrar los perros", follows a father carrying his wounded son. His second great work was the novel Pedro Páramo, published in 1955.

In this novel, a man named Juan Preciado visits the town of Comala. He finds a deserted place filled with ghosts and spirits.

His life began in 1917 in the state of Jalisco, Mexico. His early years were quite difficult because of many losses. His father died in 1923, and his mother died in 1927. His grandmother raised him in the city of Guadalajara. His family lost their wealth during the Mexican Revolution and the Cristero War. These wars happened between 1926 and 1928. These events likely shaped the serious themes in his writing. He even changed his birth year to get into a military academy.

Before he became a full-time writer, Rulfo held many different jobs. He worked as an immigration file clerk in Mexico City. He also worked as a traveling sales agent for a company. This job forced him to travel all over southern Mexico. These travels helped him see the real landscapes he would later write about. Between 1952 and 1954, he used a fellowship to finish his books. He also worked as an editor for the National Institute for Indigenous People.

The novel Pedro Páramo has been translated into more than 30 languages. It has sold over a million copies in the United States alone. His family even started the Juan Rulfo Foundation to keep his memory alive. They hold more than 6,000 of his original photographs.
