Bravo loved to capture the beauty in everyday life. He looked at ordinary things like shop windows and urban streets. He also photographed folk art and local rituals. He often focused on textures, such as a lock of hair on a patterned tile floor. His work helped people think about what it meant to be Mexican.

Bravo learned how to take photos mostly by himself. He was a self-taught photographer, even though he took art classes at a national academy. He used large cameras to make sure his pictures had lots of detail. He did not just care about technical skill, though. He wanted his images to feel poetic. He often gave his photos special titles based on Mexican myths and culture. This helped his viewers understand the deeper meaning of his work. He used these titles to make each image stand out.

His journey began in Mexico City, where he was born in 1902. His father was a teacher and a painter. His grandfather was a professional portrait maker. Because of his family, Bravo was around art from a very young age. He grew up in the historic center of the city. When he was eight, the Mexican Revolution began. He saw and heard many difficult things during this time. These experiences later had an effect on the photos he took.

Bravo met many important artists during his long career. In 1924, he bought his first camera. In 1927, he met the photographer Tina Modotti. She introduced him to many other creative people. He also worked in the Mexican film industry from 1943 to 1959. He made still shots for movies like Nazarín. He even worked with the famous artist André Breton. Breton helped show Bravo's work to people in France. Bravo won many big awards, like the Hasselblad Award in 1984.

Today, many people can still see his amazing work. His photos are kept in famous places like the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles. There is also a special place called the Centro Fotográfico Álvarez Bravo in Oaxaca. This center was started in 1996 by Francisco Toledo. It has a large library and thousands of photographs. In 2017, his work was even added to a special list by UNESCO. This list helps protect the most important memories of the world. His art continues to teach us about history and culture.
