He started with drawings and paintings of things like apples. Later, he began making sculptures out of bronze. Before he used bronze, he tried using sawdust and resin. He found that the resin was too porous for his work. Eventually, he became famous for his large bronze statues. These statues are often placed in big public squares.

Botero had a very busy life of travel and study. He was born in Medellín on April 19, 1932.

He won a big prize in Colombia in 1958. After that, he sailed to Europe to learn more. He studied in Madrid at the Academia de San Fernando. He also spent a lot of time in the Louvre museum in Paris. He lived in Paris for much of his life. However, he always stayed connected to his home in Colombia.

His life included both great success and hard times. In 1995, a bomb exploded near one of his sculptures in Medellín. This event killed 23 people and hurt many others. Botero decided to leave the damaged statue where it was. He called it a monument to the crimes of the country.
