He is known for making narrative paintings in a style called Cubism. This style uses shapes to tell a story. Husain's work was very important to modern art in India. He was a founding member of the Bombay Progressive Artists' Group. This group of artists wanted to use new techniques. They wanted to connect Indian art to the rest of the world. His paintings could be funny or very serious.

Husain's way of working changed many times during his life. In his early years, he painted cinema posters in Mumbai. He also designed and built toys to earn money. He even painted large billboards for the Bollywood film industry. Later, he focused on many different themes in his art. He painted famous people like Gandhi and Mother Teresa. He also painted stories from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. He often painted scenes from Indian city and country life. He even made films, such as Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities.

His journey as an artist began in Pandharpur, India. He was born there on 17 September 1915. As a young man, he studied calligraphy in Baroda. He attended the Sir Jamsetjee Jeejebhoy School of Art in Mumbai. In 1934, he sold his very first painting for 10 rupees. This happened on a roadside. He later joined the Progressive Artists' Group in December 1947. This happened right after the Partition of India and Pakistan. The artists felt this was a turning point for Indian art.

Husain's life included many big moments and hard times. In 1952, he had his first solo art show in Zürich. He also showed his work in New York City in 1964. Some of his paintings became very expensive. One painting called Voices sold for $2.5 million in 2020. However, some of his art caused great trouble. He painted religious figures in ways that many people found upsetting. This led to many protests and lawsuits against him. Because of these problems, he lived in exile starting in 2006.
