He was both a painter and a film director. He made about 40,000 paintings in his life.

In his early years, Husain worked hard to make a living. He painted posters for movies. He also made and built toys.

Later, he joined a group called the Bombay Progressive Artists' Group. This group wanted to bring new ideas to Indian art.

Husain used a style called Cubism. This is a way of painting that uses shapes. His art showed many things. He painted stories from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. He also painted people like Gandhi and Mother Teresa.

Some of his art caused big problems. He painted religious figures in ways that some people did not like. This led to many protests and lawsuits. Because of this, Husain had to leave India. He lived in Qatar and London for many years. He stayed away from home to avoid legal trouble. He died in London in 2011.
