He was born on June 11, 1882, in Boston, Massachusetts. His father died when Alvin was only seven years old. His mother, Fannie, raised him and became a big influence. In 1890, he received a 4 x 5 Kodak camera from his uncles. He loved the camera right away. He quickly learned how to use a darkroom to make photos. His cousin, F. Holland Day, saw his talent and encouraged him. This helped Alvin start a professional career in art.

Coburn's career grew very fast after he moved to London. At age 17, his photos were shown in a big exhibition.

Shaw once called him the greatest photographer in the world. Coburn also loved to take photos of beautiful places. He traveled to the Grand Canyon and Yosemite National Park. He also took famous photos of New York City from high up. One of his most famous images is called "The Octopus." These high views showed the world in a new way.

In 1913, he published a book called Men of Mark. This book had 33 prints of important people. He included famous names like Mark Twain and Theodore Roosevelt. He said he liked to photograph people he admired. He also liked to study different styles of art. He was interested in art from the East. This helped him think about his own photos differently. He even worked on a special book with the writer H.G. Wells. This book was released in a limited number of copies.

Later, Coburn wanted to try something very new and different. He wanted to make abstract photographs. These are photos that show shapes instead of real objects.

To do this, he built a special tool with three mirrors. This tool worked like a kaleidoscope to break up the image. The poet Ezra Pound called this tool a "Vortoscope." The new photos were called "Vortographs." He made about 18 of these unique images in one month. They are some of the first abstract photos ever made.
