He is best known for his work during the Great Depression. This was a very difficult time for many people in America. Evans worked for government groups like the Farm Security Administration. His job was to document how people lived during these hard years. He wanted his pictures to feel important and true. He called his own style "Lyric Documentary."

To make his art, Evans often used a very large camera. This was a large-format view camera that measured 8 by 10 inches. He did not spend much time in a darkroom making prints. Instead, he often wrote notes on his negatives to give instructions. This helped others know exactly how to print his work. Later in his life, he used a different tool. He used a Polaroid SX-70 instant camera because it was fast and simple.

In 1928, he began his journey with photography. He traveled to Cuba in 1933 to take photos of street life. While there, he met the famous writer Ernest Hemingway. Hemingway even lent him money so he could stay in Cuba longer.

One of his most famous projects happened in Alabama. In 1936, he photographed three families living in Hale County. These families worked as sharecroppers and lived in poverty. He worked with a writer named James Agee on this project. They later published a book called Let Us Now Praise Famous Men. This book showed the lives of families like the Burroughs, Fields, and Tingle families.
