He was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, on March 9, 1902. He first studied to be an engineer at the Escuela Libre de Ingenieros. He graduated in 1923 and later finished his work to become an architect. After school, he traveled to Spain and France. In France, he read the work of Ferdinand Bac. This writer and designer influenced him for his whole life. He later traveled to New York in 1931. During this trip, he met the painter José Clemente Orozco.

Barragán had a very special way of designing buildings. He did not think a house should be a "machine for living." Instead, he wanted to create "emotional architecture." He believed any building that did not feel calm was a mistake. To do this, he used raw materials like stone and wood. He also used light in a very dramatic way. He often used hidden light sources. This made the inside of his buildings feel soft and peaceful. His work focused on how spaces and colors make people feel.

He worked on many important projects across Mexico. In 1945, he began planning a large residential area called Jardines del Pedregal. In 1947, he built his own home and studio in Tacubaya. He also worked on the Convento de las Capuchinas Sacramentarias in 1955. One of his most famous works is the Torres de Satélite.

He made these tall urban sculptures with the artist Mathias Goeritz. In 1967, he created the Cuadra San Cristóbal Estates for horses. These projects show his skill with large spaces and nature.

Many people have honored Barragán for his great talent. In 1980, he won the Pritzker Prize. This is the highest award a person can get in architecture. His own home, the Luis Barragán House and Studio, is very special.

UNESCO named it a World Heritage Site in 2004. This means the building is important to the whole world. Today, students and teachers travel from many countries to see his work. His house is now a museum where people can learn about his life.

Barragán's ideas still help architects today. He was an expert at designing outdoor spaces. He knew how to connect the outside world with the inside of a building. He even gave advice to the architect Louis Kahn. Kahn wanted a garden between two buildings at the Salk Institute. Barragán suggested an open plaza with water instead. This helped the space match the spirit of the area. His influence can still be seen in the colorful work of Ricardo Legorreta.
