Severiano Ballesteros Sota was a legendary professional golfer from Spain. He was a world number one player for many weeks. During his career, he won 90 international tournaments. This included five major championships, which are the most important contests in golf. He won The Open Championship three times between 1979 and 1988. He also won the Masters Tournament twice.

He was a key figure in making European golf very popular. He helped the European Ryder Cup team win five times as both a player and a captain. In 2000, a magazine called Golf Digest named him the greatest golfer from Continental Europe of all time.

Seve grew up in a family filled with talented golfers. He was the youngest of five sons in the village of Pedreña, Spain. He learned how to play the game on the beaches near his home. He often practiced during the hours he was supposed to be in school. When he was eight years old, his brother Manuel gave him a 3-iron to use.

His uncle Ramón Sota was also a professional champion. His brothers and even his nephews became professional golfers too. This family connection helped him stay close to the sport he loved.

His professional career began in March 1974 when he was only 16. He became a star in 1976 when he finished second at The Open.

In 1979, he won his first Open Championship. During that game, he hit a shot into a car park but still made a birdie. He won the Masters Tournament in 1980 at age 23. This was the first time a player from Europe had won that tournament. He also won the 1984 Open Championship at St Andrews. He called his winning putt there the happiest moment of his sporting life.

As the years passed, Seve faced some hard jobs. He struggled with injuries to his back during the late 1990s. These injuries made it difficult for him to play as much as he wanted. He eventually retired from competitive professional golf in 2007.

Even after retiring, he stayed busy with golf. He ran a business that designed golf courses. He also helped start the Seve Trophy, which is a team competition. This competition lets players from Great Britain and Ireland play against players from Continental Europe.

In 2008, Seve was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. This is a serious type of cancer. He went through many difficult medical treatments and surgeries.

He showed great determination while he was sick. He even started the Seve Ballesteros Foundation to help people fight cancer. The foundation also helps young golfers who need financial help. Seve died in May 2011 at the age of 54. Many famous golfers, like Tiger Woods, have praised his amazing talent and skill.
