Severiano Ballesteros Sota was a legendary Spanish professional golfer. He was a dominant force in the sport from the mid-1970s to the mid-1990s. During his career, he achieved the rank of World No. 1. He won 90 international tournaments throughout his professional life. This total included five major championships, which are the most prestigious titles in golf. He won The Open Championship three times between 1979 and 1988. He also secured the Masters Tournament twice. His skill helped lead the re-emergence of European golf on the global stage.

Ballesteros grew up in a family with a deep connection to golf. He was born on April 9, 1957, in Pedreña, Cantabria, Spain. He was the youngest of five sons. His father, Baldomero, worked as a farm labourer. One of his brothers died in childhood. However, all the other brothers became professional golfers. His uncle, Ramón Sota, was a Spanish professional champion. Even his nephews, Raúl and Ivan, became professionals. Seve learned the game by playing on beaches near his home. He often practiced during school hours using a 3-iron given to him by his brother, Manuel.

His professional career began in March 1974 at age 16. He gained international attention in 1976 at age 19. That year, he finished second at The Open at Royal Birkdale Golf Club. He led by two shots after the third round. However, he tied for second with Jack Nicklaus after the final round. In 1979, he won his first Open Championship. During that tournament, he famously hit a tee shot into a car park on the 16th hole. Despite this, he still made a birdie on that hole. In 1980, he won the Masters Tournament at age 23. This was the first time a European player had won the Masters. He was also the youngest winner of the tournament at that time.

Ballesteros was a vital member of the European Ryder Cup team. The Ryder Cup is a famous competition between Europe and the United States. He played 37 matches against the U.S. and scored 22.5 points. His partnership with José María Olazábal was the most successful in history. They won 11 out of 15 pair matches together. Ballesteros helped the European team win or retain the Cup several times. In 1997, he reached a career pinnacle by captaining the winning European side. This event took place at Valderrama Golf Club in Sotogrande, Spain. It was the first time the Ryder Cup was held in continental Europe.

His dominance is reflected in many official statistics. He won the European Tour Order of Merit six times. This title is based on a player's earnings. He also held the top spot in the Official World Golf Ranking for 61 weeks. This period began when the rankings started in April 1986. He remained in the world's top ten for fifteen years from 1977 to 1991. In 2000, Golf Digest magazine ranked him as the greatest Continental European golfer of all time. He was also ranked as the 16th greatest golfer of all time overall. His influence helped shape the modern era of European golf.

In his later years, Ballesteros faced physical challenges. He suffered from various back-related injuries. These injuries made it difficult to maintain his competitive form. He eventually retired from professional golf in July 2007. However, he remained active in the golf community. He ran a successful business designing golf courses. He also helped introduce the Seve Trophy in 2000. This is a team competition between Great Britain and Ireland and continental Europe. He also served as a captain for the Royal Trophy team.

In 2008, Ballesteros was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour. This is a serious type of cancer. He underwent four different operations to treat the tumour.
