Many people call him one of the greatest golfers to ever play. He won over 160 professional tournaments across six different continents. He also won nine major championships, which are the most important contests in the sport. Along with Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, he was known as one of "The Big Three" during the mid-1960s. This group represented the very best of golf during that era. Player's skill and success earned him a place in the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974.

Winning a major championship requires incredible skill and focus. Player achieved a very rare feat called a career Grand Slam. This means he won all the major titles in his career. He became the first non-American to do this in 1965. At age 29, he was the youngest person to reach this goal at that time. Later, players like Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods won it even younger. Player was also known for his amazing fitness and diet. He used these habits to stay strong and play for many years.

Player's life in golf began when he became a professional at age 17. He was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, to Harry and Muriel Player. In 1957, he married Vivienne Verwey, who was the sister of golfer Bobby Verwey. They had six children together: Jennifer, Marc, Wayne, Michele, Theresa, and Amanda. During his early career, his family often traveled with him to tournaments.

He was a very busy traveler and likely flew more than any other athlete in history.

Beyond playing, Player has had a huge impact on the world of golf. He is a famous golf course architect who has worked on more than 400 projects. He has also written or helped write 36 books about golf and fitness. In 2021, United States President Donald Trump gave him the Presidential Medal of Freedom. His son, Marc, runs The Player Group, which manages his many business activities. Player also won a legal battle in 2020 to get the rights to his own name back. This was a significant moment for his personal legacy and business.

Player also uses his success to help people through education. The Player Foundation works to help children who do not have many resources. In 1983, Marc Player started the Blair Atholl Schools in Johannesburg, South Africa. These schools provide education for more than 500 students from kindergarten to eighth grade. By 2013, charity golf events had helped raise over US$60 million for these causes. These events took place in many cities, including London, Shanghai, and Cape Town. Player's work shows how a great athlete can help change lives through giving.
