Padre Island is very special. It is the largest barrier island in the world. In 1962, a deep path was dug through it. This path is called the Port Mansfield Channel. It split the island into two parts. Now, people call them North Padre Island and South Padre Island. The islands help make bays like Galveston Bay and Christmas Bay. Each island sits near a different estuary.
