geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Texas barrier islands are a long chain of land. They sit along the Texas Gulf Coast. These islands lie in the Gulf of Mexico. They act like a wall for the coast. They enclose many estuaries behind them. An estuary is where salt and fresh water meet.

There are seven main islands in this chain. They run from the northeast to the southwest. First is Galveston Island near the Trinity–San Jacinto Estuary. Next is Follet's Island by Christmas Bay.

It helps form the Laguna Madre Estuary. This area is a very important part of the coast. The island is a huge natural feature.

Something big happened to Padre Island in 1962. People dug a deep path through the land. This path is called the Port Mansfield Channel. It was dug roughly north of the south end.

This channel split the island into two parts. Now, we call them North Padre Island and South Padre Island. The island is no longer one single piece.

Each island has its own special place. You can see them on a map. The islands help create many different water areas.
