The Gulf of Panama is a large part of the Pacific Ocean.

It sits along the southern coast of Panama. This area is very important for moving goods around the world. The Panama Canal connects this gulf to the Caribbean Sea. This link joins the Pacific and Atlantic oceans together. Most of the southern shores of eastern Panama touch these waters. The main city on the coast is Panama City.

Many smaller parts make up this large area. To the north is Panama Bay. The Gulf of Parita sits to the west. The Gulf of San Miguel is to the east. The Tuira River flows south into that eastern gulf.

You can also find the Pearl Islands there. This is a group of over two hundred islands. These islands are located in the eastern part of the gulf. They have clear water that is full of nutrients.

People have lived near this water for a very long time. Some people lived here around 6000 BC. These were hunter-gatherer groups from the Preceramic Period. They lived off the many fish and turtles in the bay.

They even used meat, bones, and oil from dolphins and sharks. Today, tourism is a huge part of the local economy. Many people visit the Pearl Islands to see the wildlife. Some islands like Pedro González benefit from this tourism. Other places like Contadora try to keep their local culture safe.

Nature is very busy and active in the gulf. Mangroves grow along the coast and are very important. These trees provide shelter and food for many local birds.

Over 20 species of birds live in these mangroves. Brown pelicans are the most common birds you might see. You might also see egrets, terns, and herons. The birds help show if the fish are healthy. The fish rely on the debris from the mangroves to survive. The weather can be extreme with very dry and very wet seasons.

Keeping the gulf healthy is a big job for Panama. The growing oil industry and city growth bring new worries.

There are concerns about oil spills and sewage pollution. Some laws focus more on business than on nature. However, people are working hard to protect the area. In 2015, a law was signed to protect 210,000 acres. This helps save the mangroves and the birds that live there. The goal is to stop erosion and keep the water clean.
