The geography of this place is very interesting. It is a narrow strip of land along the coast. Near this land, there is a huge group of islands. This group is called an archipelago. There are 365 islands in this group. However, only 50 of those islands have people living on them.

Many people visit the area for sailing. The islands are very beautiful to see. But the rising sea levels might change these islands by the end of the century.

The history of the Guna people includes many changes. Long ago, the Kuna people lived near the Gulf of Urabá. This area is in what we call Colombia today. When the Spaniards arrived in the 1600s, there was much fighting. The Kuna people moved toward the Darién region to find safety. In the mid-1800s, they began moving onto islands near river mouths. This helped them stay away from snakes and mosquitoes. Living on islands also made it easier to trade goods like coconuts.

In 1925, a big event called the Guna Revolution happened. The Guna people fought the government of Panama. They wanted to protect their own customs and culture. For a few days, they even had their own republic called the Republic of Tule. After a peace treaty, the government agreed to protect Guna customs. This was a very important step for their independence. Later, the area became an official district in 1938. Its borders were finished in 1953.
